Why Do We Need a Skincare Routine?

With all of the unnecessary beauty products out there, it's easy to wonder if a skincare routine is really necessary. While my skincare routine is one of my favourite ways to unwind, it's also important for the health of my skin.

Why Do We Need a Skincare Routine?

An effective skincare routine supports your skin's natural functions. It also supports your skin as you deal with pollution, weather, stress, and makeup.

Pollution + Dirt.

Whether you live in the city or suburbs, you're going to be exposed to pollution, smoke, and lots of dirt.

Throughout the day pollution is absorbed into your skin, causing inflammation that can present itself as redness and irritation.

At the end of the day, your skincare routine allows you to remove some of the pollution and dirt, replacing it with hydrating, nourishing ingredients.

While I developed my skincare routine when I lived in a warm climate, it became incredibly important when I moved to Toronto. We deal with hot summers, but incredibly cold winters.

The weather can irritate your skin, cause sun damage, and affect moisture levels. This is why I recommend switching things up seasonally.

Chronic stress will increase your cortisol levels, which can throw your body's hormones out of balance.

One of the first things I notice during stressful times is a change in my skin. My skin becomes a little more dull, congested, and irritated, which then causes acne.

Your skincare routine can help ensure as much balance as possible, although I also recommend finding ways to manage stress like exercise, meditation, or reducing your workload.

If you wear makeup, you'll know how important it is to take it off at the end of the day. When left on your skin for lengthy periods, makeup can clog your pores, irritate your skin, and throw things off balance.

Your skincare routine can remove the makeup and properly cleanse your skin, leaving you with a fresh, balanced complexion.

What's your number one reason for creating a skincare routine?
