One of the best things we can do for our skin is listen to it because our skin’s needs change with our hormones, our stress levels, and our physical environment. What our skin needs in April is not what our skin needs in October. As you gear up for Fall, don’t forget these three steps that you can take to creating a glow-inducing skincare ritual.
Opt for a More Hydrating Cleanser
One of the worst things you can do for your skin is strip away the natural oils. One of the easiest ways to avoid that is to use a hydrating cleanser.
An oil or aloe based cleanser is going to remove makeup, dirt, and impurities, without removing your skin’s natural oils, which is especially important during Fall. And it’s a bonus if your cleanser has (gentle) exfoliating ingredients like pineapple enzymes or red raspberry seed oil to promote healthy cell turnover, shed dead skin cells, and keep your skin soft and glowy.
If you wear lots of makeup, you can double cleanse with an oil based makeup remover, followed with a cleansing milk.
Introduce Brightening and Vitamin Rich Toners and Serums
When that natural Summer glow starts to fade, you might notice your skin looks more dull, lackluster, and just...off.
This is when you should reach for brightening, vitamin rich, and antioxidant infused toners and serums.
Toners are an important step for balancing the skin’s pH levels. When our skin’s pH is balanced, our skin is well...balanced. It’s going to be happier, healthier, and look it too. (This is also super important for people with acne prone skin! When our skin’s pH is off, it can create new spots, but when our pH is balanced, things are usually pretty calm!).
I recommend going for a balancing, but brightening toner that is infused with vitamins and antioxidants (see product picks below!).
As for serums, this is where we can really treat our skin. There are so many beautiful serums out there that are infused with high (but safe) concentrations of nutrients to keep your skin looking its best. A vitamin C serum is always a go-to in the Fall, but there are a lot of other options that combine multiple vitamins and minerals.
Note: I highly recommend avoiding vitamin C serums and products during the day, as they can make your skin more susceptible to sun damage, even if you wear sunscreen. While we totally want to use these serums, keep their use to your nighttime ritual.
Reach for a Light, But Nourishing Face Cream
I prefer light facial oils in the Summer, as they effectively moisturize the skin while providing a healthy, natural glow, without the added weight of waxes and butters.
But as Fall approaches, those waxes and butters offer more moisture and they can provide a layer of protection against the elements. I love reaching for a face cream that’s light, but nourishing - think aloe based, not oil based.
The cream will sink into the skin to moisturize, and many are infused with healing herbs, essential vitamins and minerals, and glow-inducing (and protective) antioxidants.

A Word on Sunscreen
Just because you’re not at the beach everyday doesn’t mean you should skip the sunscreen. A facial sunscreen is necessary each and everyday to protect your skin from the sun. As someone who has had many skin cancer scares (it runs in my family) I’m begging you to not skip this step!
