The corn starch is a sensitive skin friendly alternative to baking soda (bs can be a little abrasive!), the shea butter and sunflower oil moisturize, nourish, and reduce inflammation, and the magnesium prevents odor by creating an environment where bacteria cannot thrive! (This is what you want in a deodorant - you want an ingredient like magnesium to adjust the pH so the bacteria that causes odor can't survive!)
One of my favourite parts of this deodorant is the club moss extract and charcoal, ingredients that naturally absorb excess moisture, which means you get the benefits of an antiperspirant but without the harmful side effects!
And the blend of essential oils, while long, is still safe for sensitive skin. I know that a lot of people find EOs to be irritating, especially in large quantities, but I've got VERY sensitive skin and I assure you, there has been zero irritation!
Texture - I'm not usually a fan of deodorant pastes as they can be pretty messy. But this one is totally different. It has a smooth texture that's easy to apply and sinks right into the sink. There's no mess, and it doesn't take much longer to apply than a deodorant stick.
Scent - This has an obvious lavender mint scent, but I also get a little bit of the tea tree and the bergamot, which all works together to give off this super grounding, healing, maybe even a little bit herbal vibe that I love. The scent isn't obnxious, and not something I smell throughout the day, but it's a nice scent when applying!
Efficacy - This works so well. It lasts throughout the day and there's no need to reapply. It's light on the skin, so it doesn't feel greasy, nor does it leave any residue on my clothing. I especially love that I feel a little more dry with this deodorant, thanks to the moisture absorbing club moss and charcoal!
Sustainability** - I'm really impressed with the steps Soapwalla takes to ensure their products are sustainably sourced. In this case, they use lots of organic ingredients and Fair Trade shea butter.
When I reached out to Rachel (the founder) about their sustainability practices, she said:
"Our shea butter is absolutely fair trade, and comes from a women's cooperative in Ghana. We are insanely diligent about sourcing all our materials from reputable farmers and co-ops that share the same passion for environmental conservation, and good worker conditions that we do."
It's always nice to hear about sustainability from the founder of a brand! If you're ever unsure about sourcing or product information I encourage you to reach out via email or on social to learn more!
Sustainable sourcing aside, I do wish this wasn't in plastic packaging - a glass jar would be one solution, although I imagine it would increase the price. However, I'm going to keep using (and loving) this deodorant because it's one of the few that I can totally trust to keep odor (and moisture) at bay with safe, healthy ingredients!
Have you used any of the Soapwalla products before? I've been eyeing their Phosphorescence Facial Mask for a while and now I'm even more eager to try it!
**This new feature of my reviews is meant to offer my readers valuable insight into what sustainability is so they know what to look for in their own products. Any product I feature here is one I truly believe in and recommend with my whole heart - so if I have recommendations on improving sustainability, it's always with love and compassion - I'm never trying to bring anyone down!
