How to Mask for Your Skin Type

Masking can be a simple weekly ritual that leaves your skin refreshed and balanced. But sometimes the clay leaves your forehead a little dry, or the hydrating cream leaves your chin a little oily. Which is why we've gotten creative and use different masks together for one heavenly, balanced skincare ritual. 

As someone who adores a good mask, I try to keep myself limited to five masks. I think everyone should have four to five foundational masks that really do wonders for their skin. From there, I recommend adding different types of clay, activated charcoal, oils, aloe, and sometimes even essential oils. 

What Masks Should Everyone Have? 

These are masks everyone should have so they're always equipped to take care of their skin. I've recommended my favourites as well. 

I find these are the main reasons your skin will need a mask, which is why I like to keep them around. Other options include a light exfoliant, like the Andalou Naturals Kombucha Enzyme Exfoliating Mask or a luxurious overnight treatment like the Herbivore Botanicals Moon Fruit Superfruit Night Treatment

What is Multi Masking? 

Multi masking isn't new, but it's one of my favourite ways to mask. It involves using different masks for different areas of your face. It's a simple way to nourish your skin and give it what it needs. 

For example, I often use a hydrating mask on my forehead, while I'll use a clarifying mask on my nose, cheeks, and chin, because that's where I get acne. Sometimes I'll also use a brightening mask on my cheeks, but a hydrating mask on my forehead, and a clarifying one on my nose and chin.

Multi masking allows us to target specific areas, leaving all of our skin balanced instead of too dry or too oily. 

How Should I Mix Masks? 

Mixing masks is another way to balance your skin. I've started adding my Sattva Pure Pure Glow Hydrating Masque* (Discontinued) to all of my other masks. This has helped give my skin the brightening or clarifying properties it needs while also providing deep hydration. It's a much more balancing treatment that has been really effective. 

How Can I 'Boost' a Mask? 

If you want to get really creative, try mixing your masks with toner or fresh aloe instead of water. Add a little bit of french green clay to absorb oil, or activated charcoal to pull the gunk out of your pores. Or even a little bit of turmeric for some herbal brightness. Add one drop (seriously, just one drop. This stuff is potent!) of lavender essential oil to calm sensitive skin, or tea tree for acne.
